Can US citizens have dual citizenship with Malta?

Yes. Both countries allow dual citizenship.

The answer depends on how long you plan to stay. If you only need to stay a few months (or up to 90 days during any 180-day period), Americans don’t need a visa or any special documentation. That’s because Malta is part of the Schengen Zone, which allows people from the US this amount of time visa-free.

If you do want to live as a resident, there is a “Golden Visa” style program called the Malta Permanent Residence Program (MPRP). It requires that you either rent or buy property at certain value levels and make a government contribution of €30,000 (if you are leasing property) or €60,000 (if you are buying property).

This depends on your route, but citizenship by investment can be quite expensive. If you opt for the smaller contribution, you buy a qualifying property, and you apply without any dependents attached to your application, you’ll pay around €1,341,527.50 with all the relevant fees added in.

If you can afford the citizenship by investment, then yes. In fact, some EU oversight committees have criticized Malta for how easy their citizenship by investment program is.
